OH MY GOD I would have flipped a table. Label it incomplete or one of a series or SOMETHING. THAT IS NOT A COMPLETE STORY. “Maybe I’ll write a sequel!” Yeah, and maybe I will spontaneously develop superpowers allowing me to reach through the screen and SLAP YOU.

I...may have had similar experiences in the past. And reacted similarly. You have my sympathy, OP. At least mine weren’t in tiny fandoms.

(I do remember one particular author who was writing this one particular fic. Multi-part slightly AU fic series, bringing what seemed to be promising an interesting conclusion to a long, LONG running canon. I read right up to what was marked as the end of the series. The last stories in the series were two short fics. Like, less than 1000 words each. One in which two characters did of a lot of excited grinning at each other preparing for the final confrontation. And the last one was a short fic about one character musing about what he’d do now that it was all over. WITHOUT ANY MENTION OF WHAT THE FUCK HAPPENED. I’m still annoyed about that one.)

Damn lol

That kind of ending (the two ficlets if you will) would leave me feeling crazy -- like surely, I must have missed something, the author deleted something before I read it -- that line of thinking. jeez that's awful.

But I also don't know if I can look too harshly on it, if only because I wonder if faced have having to write a particular confrontation, what if I did it no justice and the whole series is ruined because of it?

This whole thing has me thinking of the Twilight series lmao. I really thought I missed a chapter or something in the first book because I didn't understand when Bella/Edward fell in love. And then the build up and ABSOLUTE LET DOWN that was the ending -- character assassination is too strong, but HOW DIRTY meyers did Jacob (WHOM I LOVED)...I walked away pinning any hope and love for the series on poor Seth Clearwater. And he was just the baby.

DA I share your frustrations about the Twilight series. I'll never get over the book collecting all these supposedly amazing vampires and they're all set for the big showdown and then they all leave because of Alice's vision. So damn stupid. Why the fuck did Meyer have to assassinate Jacob's character like that? And the less that's said about that imprinting bullshit, the better.

Ayrt

UGH RIGHT?! I don't ever bring that mess up. And yeah, you know what it was def a character assassination. That..."ending" was how could she??!! Just...eugh. I recall stopping, feeling like someone just disrespectfully spit in my face and deciding he was dead to me.

I was super hyped about the battle and then for nothing. Again, this was the slap in the face followed by the insult of what happened with Jacob. I went to the midnight release party at the local bookstore for this mess! But I did have a great time that night lol

That's so cool that you go to go to the release party! I wanted to go to the release party so bad, but my parents wouldn't let me. I went straight to the bookstore in the morning to pick up my reserved copy (they had all the books in a coffin lol), read it all in one sitting, and felt like I'd been robbed because the book was so awful.

I just want to say that I find your rage over this both very relatable, and very cathartic. Thank you.
