Not to sound like an ad, but have you heard of Hunt a Killer board game? Heard it's pretty good if you like cold/murder cases.

Is that the monthly subscription box? I have been wanting to try the subscription box but I am still too worried about money to join.

Check out the book The Late Show by Michael Connelly. The beginning shows the tedious nature of police bureaucracy as well as the penalty for being a woman who won't play ball with sexist men and you'll be cured of the notion that being a detective is any fun at all.

I definitely know what you mean

I think I could be really good at being an investigator if the job only included the parts of like, tracking down and piecing together records, I'm extremely good and patient at that

Forensic scientist or forensic accountant?

(Anonymous) 2021-01-20 12:48 am (UTC)(link)
Private Investigator maybe?

Look around for true crime enthusiasts? I'm sure there are a lot of subreddits! I'd suggest thinking of unsolved crimes that have drawn your attention and do research on them, see if there are research groups who have already formed? You will likely run into ppl who do indepedent true crime investigations and be able to network from there. Suggest watching "I'll Be Gone in the Dark". A lot of ppl were just online sleuths and they built up an awesome support system through the years.

You never know. Keep it up as a hobby and you might end up finding unconventional ways to turn your hobby into a career.

Seriously give it a go OP!!!!! I think it's awesome you have found something that you are passionate about.

I feel this! I wish I could have a career do-over and be a profiler for the FBI. Alas, too old.

I teach criminal justice and I swear that half of my students have this as their goal. I love encouraging dreams, but ugh, this is tough. 1) The FBI has had a hiring freeze the last few years (though it may be lifted recently? Not sure.) 2) Even if you go into the FBI, chances are super, super slim that you'll get into profiling. 3) Even if by some miracle a person makes it to this section, it really is not like it's portrayed in television, books, or movies.

The FBI builds cases just like most other law enforcement agencies. It's less about clues and circumstantial evidence and more about interviews, witnesses, and informants. You have to have a high tolerance for people lying to you. Evidence is helpful but rarely will solve a case all on its own. And trace evidence is rarely collected or analyzed by detectives or any other law enforcement. *shrug*

Maybe you could start a true crime podcast, anon.

I was going to say!

(Anonymous) 2021-01-20 03:57 am (UTC)(link)
Go into crime scene investigation or forensic science, or or (if you're artistic) forensic facial reconstruction.

I was obsessed with CSI back in the day and am now pursuing a masters degree in forensic pathology 😬 follow your dreams op!

Screw cops. Start a podcast or become a weird little old lady/man/enby private detective solving crime out of your parlour.

Michelle McNamara's book about the Golden State Killer helped in his arrest. Last Podcast on the Left and My Favorite Murder are both popular podcasts about (mostly solved) murders. You could do that, but focused on unsolved mysteries! There are a lot of people who don't want to do monetizable work, but they spend time in forums helping solve cases just for the joy of it. The Zodiac Killer's cipher was solved by three (admittedly former code experts) who connected on forums and just decided to spend the time on it.

If you can't get up and about and do the physical work, there are all sorts of ways you can be part of the field. Even if you aren't getting paid, there's a lot of value in a good ol' hobby.

You can do this somehow, OP!

well OP if it makes you feel better about missing out almost all forensic science fails basic replicability/validity tests and mostly exists to help cops invent evidence against people they want to send to prison
