I'll just randomly chime in here to say that I've just finished teh sixt book in the series and I'm glad I didn't abandon it in the middle of book two (which annoyed the hell out of me). I'm very impressed in the way the author keeps improving and (I assume) taking the criticism in - the male-gaziness disapprears almost completely, he turns his sort-of-perfunctory and very underdeveloped romance from book 1 into something more believable and developed in book 5...

Book 2 is my least favourite and probably the weakest of the series. Book 2 is a bit less annoying than it seems when you're half way through, because it turns out there is an actual reason why Peter is behaving the way he is, but it's still not one I enjoy revisiting. As you say, it's great how the author develops the character and his relationships.
