I don't think it's about laziness. I think soap-opera storytelling structures (which is how I think of those elements) are appealing to a huge number of people.

It so happens that I personally can't stand them one bit. So I would totally love it if they were no longer the norm. But that's the way the cookie crumbles I guess - I think we are the weird ones here.
