Good. That terrible p*do arthouse film deserves to be cancelled.

(Anonymous) 2021-01-23 04:44 am (UTC)(link)
You don't actually think this

(Anonymous) 2021-01-23 09:25 am (UTC)(link)
It's not p*do, but it is a film about a mid-twenties PhD candidate grooming the secondary school aged child of his host family. That shit would get you expelled from nearly every university in the Western world and shouldn't be romanticised on film.

We also don't need any more LQBTQ+ films following this dated trope almost always written by a straight man. It's pathetic.

Whether you think it's appropriate or not is separate from whether it's pedo

But also I don't really believe you're acting in good faith here. If you know it's not pedo, why did you say it was.

Because I'm not the OP commenter! Anyone can post anon, we're not all one person. Omg I can't believe I needed to explain this...so here's my real profile if that makes it easier.

Not all minor abuse is pedophilia, but make no mistake; that was portrayed in CMBYN was sexual abuse of a minor. Regardless of what country or year the movie takes place in.

Exactly this. People love to go "but it's not pedo!!!" as if the hyperbolic terminology is the *real* problem while ignoring all the other massive issues with it because...I don't know, "cute" guys kiss or something.

I get that people use p*do for ease of use in these instances and everyone ties themselves in knots about it. Regardless, it doesn't change the fact that the age gap power dynamics of this dated trope is just gross and it's far too often used by straight writers to continue the gross homophobic stereotype that "gay men like em young". Yuck. Just give us mainstream LQBTQ+ consenting adult romances without trying to make it 'edgy' by giving questionable age issues to the characters. Damn.

(Anonymous) 2021-01-23 11:35 am (UTC)(link)
Yep. And at the very least, if you're going to tell these tired, stereotypical stories, depict them accurately and honestly as something abusive and unethical, NOT as a ~beautiful coming-of-age romance.

I have complicated feelings on the "only gay actors should act in gay roles" thing but I have absolutely no complicated feelings whatsoever about whether straight men should be writing gay characters/stories anything at this point, to be honest.

The hyperbolic terminology is, in fact, the real problem, because it's 1) leveraging potentially life-ruining accusations against people for...watching a fucking movie, and 2) making it all the more likely that accusations against actual pedophilic activity will be buried under the endless screaming about people watching a fucking movie.

Because it's a fucking movie. No actual human beings were harmed in the making of the movie. You're welcome to be squicked the fuck out by the movie. I am also squicked the fuck out by the movie. But if you scream about it being pedophilia instead of, say, just saying "no, I don't like that movie, I find it disturbing", you are objectively wrong and doing actual harm.

(Anonymous) 2021-01-23 10:50 pm (UTC)(link)
So, to be clear, you're OK with people watching, praising and even fetishizing a movie that romanticizes the grooming and sexual abuse of a minor by an adult man who arguably has a position of authority over him, as long as no one calls the movie "pedo". That's where you're going to draw the line? (And actually, many people can be harmed by behaviors that pop culture normalizes, so don't bring out the "it's a fucking movie" argument, please. Those are the ruined lives I care about. Because those are the people much more likely to experience "actual harm" than viewers of the movie are as a result of an anonymous person on the internet using an incorrect term.)

Also, I don't see anyone here screaming about it being pedophilia. I see a lot of comments of people getting hung up on the word rather than the issues, though.

ok weenie

it's extremely sketchy at best, and lbr the creators new what they were doing when they cast the actors, the younger guy looked like jailbait and hammer's character looked about 30, but all that gets ignored because 'boys kissing' so i had to endure people acing like this was some woke masterpiece and not the homophobic stereotype it was.

ayrt
It wasn't a p*do arthouse film and it doesn't deserve to be cancelled.
However, it'll never get a sequel because of Armie's reluctance and due to his hatred of Charmie insanity. And as sick and in need of help he has turned out to be, I think it shouldn't be recast. Armie IS Oliver to a lot of people.

Armie IS Oliver to a lot of people.
An abusive piece of shit? Yeah, I can see why a lot of people find him so convincing in that role.
