I can't speak for the music because I'm not very familiar with it (though I like Akeboshi), but I enjoy Japanese comics and Western comics. Get off your high horse and stop generalizing an entire fucking culture.
I hate you as much as I hate people who say they like "everything but country" when it comes to music as if there aren't hundreds of different and distinct artists to a genre.
158. It's not the poking fun. It's making a country that was murdering and torturing people by the thousands (during the time period in which this series takes place) into an innocent, likeable character with a goofy facist sidekick. I can't figure out of the author is just painfully oblivious or genuinely okay with how offensive the series is. She makes her characters sympathetic. If it were all about making fun of them, it'd be far less awful.

The messege of the story is that, even if the current government is full of assholes, the spirit of the country is unchanged. In the end, all the countries are essentially good, and if we all just accepted that fact, maybe we could all get along.
Also, the author is a guy, and if you thinking 'making fun of them' and 'sympathtic' are mutually exclusive, you're reading some crappily-written humor.

I get that the characters are supposed to represent entire countries, but nevertheless he wears a uniform similar to the uniforms worn by the Third Reich. And it's clear to me he isn't representative of the Jews or gypsies in Germany at that time. Though many in Germany were innocents forced to fight by a domineering government, it can't be ignored that the country as a whole allowed Hitler to rise to power. And I cannot be comfortable with the time period that Hetalia takes place in. Watching these "countries" have hilarious little mishaps while, apparently, the places they're representing are condoning or actively trying to achieve genocide is disturbing to me.
If I read a comic that showed goofy America bullying a silly, cowering Iraq, I'd be just as offended. Or Palestine and Israel having a sibling fight. Again, I would be terribly offended. Maybe this is over-sensitive of me, but that's how I feel.
I'm not saying comedy can't be sympathetic ever, but it really depends on the subject. And in this case, I feel it's not handled very well.

Trying to blame all of Germany for the crimes of the Third Reich is just...The idea of punishing entire cultures for the government that briefly held sway over them...it doesn't work, and it never has. Reconstruction attempted to punish the South for seceeding from the Union, and all it really did was reopen old wounds, uproot the Southern economy and give birth to the KKK. And, if Germany had not been 'punished' so severely after they lost WWI, it would have never set up the kind of economic climate and spirit of civil unrest that Hitler needed to rise to poer in the first place. Making judgements and pointing fingers...it doesn't really do anything but cause more problems.
People always say that Hetalia is racist, and, on a superficial level, it is. But underneith, it's got a very hopeful, peaceful sort of messege. The Countries all have their flaws, their crimes, their screwed-up histories and their skeletons in the closet, but at the core, they're all good people just trying to do what they can to get by, and, at the end of the fighting, they all at least tolerate each other in spite of all the mess. To be honest, I kind of wish people were more like that in real life...less judgemental and more accepting.
I don't know, I just don't think the comic is all about moe and poking fun at history. I mean, you can read it that way if you want, and that's fine. I just think there's more to it than that. That's why I read it, at least.
