Some people can, some people can't. It doesn't make them any less speshul than you.

They may have other areas of interest which bore you to tears. Physics, marine biology, Latin, plumbing, mechanics, chemistry, English, philosphy, art and a whole host of other subjects.

I'm not going to sit here and pity the history students who hated science and found it boring. And I don't think anyone needs to be condescended to by you because they didn't know of the existence of Sealand.

If there were a webcomic making fun of the hard sciences, I'd be all over it. Come on, you guys, there is so much more you can do with physics than mocking the LHC.

Maybe xkcd should be a little less irreverent...

By less, of course I mean more. [palm]

I don't find the existence of Sealand important! That's exactly why I hate Hetalia, because it just feeds people trivial facts about history and they think they're really learning something. That's not what history is about. History is about understanding why things happen the way that they do. It's about recognizing trends and being able to draw parallels between different events. It's about understanding how common people did everyday things in a different time. Those are the things history is really about, not knowing the existence of some stupid principality that sells titles for $20 over the internet.

The people who think they're learning a lot of stuff from Hetalia are no different than the people who walk into Hollywood-produced movies based on historical events and walk out thinking that they know something. It's just the way many people are regardless of what they're looking at, so I feel it's best to dislike the fact that many people take historically based entertainment as absolute fact rather than the series utilizing said history itself. From the very beginning it's really never done anything BUT feed people trivial facts about history and it will likely continue to do so until the Japanese dude writing it gets tired of making four-panel comics about pinky-swear pacts and how potatoes are eaten in France. Nothing new on the Hetalia front, but plenty new in how fans interpret it and the events it (badly) portrays.

Not everyone cares about how history should be studied anyway. As a history student, it's important to me in the same way that it's important to you. And I definitely agree with you. Yet still, your definition of what 'history is about' may differ completely from any other history student's or professor's definition, and it sure as hell is going to be different from the definitions of people who didn't care enough about WWII or anything else to learn about it until Hetalia came along. It's frustrating, sure, but Hetalia is just one blip in a long line of media equally guilty of doing the same thing, and surely there will be worse to come. There's just no way to force people into looking at things from a different perspective regardless of what history means to you, me, or anyone else.

Most of the "history" actually comes from the fans, whether it be in fanfic, fanart, etc. and this is where you usually get more indepth and insightful views on historical events. Basically, for the majority of fans, this is where our nerdiness comes out.

The webcomic itself though isn't meant to be taken as some sort of textbook for people to learn from. It's all just for fun, really and nobody's claiming any different. :/ I mean, it's dumb if people take it seriously and honestly start believing everything they read, on the other hand it's dumb to reprimand people for taking an interest history that they otherwise would not have had.

Basically, you don't have to like it, but you don't take it as a personal attack either.

(Anonymous) 2009-01-16 12:43 pm (UTC)(link)
Sealand isn't presented as important, it's presented precisely because it's so ridiculous. He's presented as a little kid who keeps trying to get the other nations to take him seriously. And even learning about seemingly trivial facts is still learning. But there may be other countries that people learn about, or haven't heard of before (or have forgotten about, because it wasn't really important to their everyday lives and/or study.)

Most people know about the big things already, but they don't know the little things, especially in countries where their own history spans centuries and centuries and encompassed a good chunk of the world (I have seen some fellow Americans getting all huffy and offended about the fact that English students weren't taught in detail about the American civil rights movement!). In cases like this, someone is going to have to do some cherry picking even for those official history classes.

The problem is, people seem to be taking Hetalia as a step by step humorous retelling of WWII. It's not, it's little different than a comic strip in a newspaper, referring to various little snippets of history/culture/opinions here and there, and it isn't even just about WWII and it isn't always funny.

It's accessible to people who were never really good at history and people who are. So many fans have used a four panel strip as a jumping point to learn something more about History, and I'm failing to see WHY you consider this a bad thing. Not everybody is a history or geography graduate, nor should everybody be one. People learn in different ways. Some people are good at learning from dry old history texts, others aren't. Some people learn better through a more practical approach, others don't. Some find it easier to use humor, others don't. I just don't understand why you get to be the the one who decides exactly how and why everyone should learn some History and Geography and exactly what every one should be offended by?

I'm not saying you have to like it, or even not to be offended, but I think you need to let go of this 'holier than thou' attitude to towards those who do, or those who feel they have learned something because of Hetalia or the fandom.

(Anonymous) 2009-01-16 02:24 pm (UTC)(link)
What!? 'Holier than thou?' Don't be riduculous, everyone who takes history seriously is in 100% agreement with [livejournal.com profile] childings and everything they say. We wouldn't be real history majors or enthusiasts otherwise! Their word is law and you best get used to it. It would simply make far too much sense for them to do something like...not comment about a series they hate on nearly every single thread regarding it on a livejournal community.

(Anonymous) 2009-01-16 03:11 pm (UTC)(link)
You shouldn't get so irrationally angry over Hetalia. If it doesn't mean anything to you, it doesn't, so you're only making yourself more miserable by constantly fueling your hate for it.

Any reviewer who expresses rage and loathing for a novel is preposterous. He or she is like a person who has put on full armor and attacked a hot fudge sundae. - Kurt Vonnegut
