I don't find it triggering, but I admit it's definitely a big turn-off for me in both fanfic and official media in general.

Woah where are you seeing it in fanfic? Honestly I'd kind of LOVE to see divorce in fanfic. It's always about getting together in those things, never about how to disentangle.

Nayrt, I've seen it as a thing that happened to the rival ship in order for the main true pairing to get together.

See, I actually like seeing it (as long as it doesn't villify the characters involved) because there's still very much a stigma against divorce in society, and I know far too many people who stayed married when they really shouldn't have because of that stigma.

Sometimes people just don't work out (through no fault of anyone's) and that's okay, and it should be treated as being okay instead of something somehow shameful.

I wouldn't mind divorce storylines about divorce being okay

But I don't think that's how 95% of divorce storylines go and I really don't want to watch emotionally wrenching depressing divorce stuff

My first thought is Thalia’s Musings. Divorce is portrayed as the healthiest possible outcome for two of the characters.

I genuinely wish there was more media related to divorce. It's so common in real life but I don't see it explored in depth that often in movies and even less so in books or comics.

I haven't looked it up but I would bet there are dozens, if not hundreds or even thousands, of novels about divorce

"failing marriage of literate well educated people" is one of the basic genres of New Yorkeresque literary fiction, isn't it

AYART
New Yorker socialite is neither the theme nor POV I'm personally interested in in regards to divorce.

One of the kid’s books I read in elementary that’s stuck with me a bit is “The Time of the Witch” precisely because of how it dealt with divorce as the best option (albeit in a fantasy way). The MC’s parents are divorcing and she desperately wants them not to. She asks a self-professed witch for her parents to get back together, but finds out a big part of the exchange is her little brother falling permanently deeply ill but never dying from the witch’s spell, and the parents feeling obligated to stay together. The witch, who it turns out really has it in for her family, tells her something like “the tendrils of their love will grow into suffocating vines of resentment as long as they are bound together”. (The spell’s broken by a good witch, but distance as a positive in a relationship was a new thing to read as a kid.)

Honestly, what I desperately wish was more common in shipfic as a way to get the canon love interest out of the way? Amicable breakups. Like, they're both decent people, it was good while it lasted, they're just not long-term compatible and it didn't work out. This is far more common IRL than a steady diet of melodramatic media would have you think.

More of this and less of either killing the CLI off or turning them into some kind of monster.

I think it's possibly partly because divorce court often changes even the most amicable balanced break up into something acrimonious.

(Anonymous) 2021-01-27 03:44 am (UTC)(link)
True, but 90% of people never go to divorce court, they sort it out themselves. There's almost always something else going on if a court is involved.

YES. This. I've said the same thing before, too. There are all sorts of reasons why relationships end, it'd be nice to see more variety with that.

(Anonymous) 2021-01-27 01:10 am (UTC)(link)
Agreed.

(Anonymous) 2021-01-27 03:59 am (UTC)(link)
Ugh yes! I utilize it sometimes in some of my fic.

HP fic where I want to pair Remus off with someone else, but he's still got a kid? Him and Tonks are just friends now, shared custody of the kid.

Sometimes things just don't work out. It doesn't always have to be this heart wrenching trauma. Sometimes it is, but sometimes, people can still be cool.

(Anonymous) 2021-01-27 04:29 am (UTC)(link)
I like the idea of normalizing, "sometimes two people just decide that they're not long-term compatible as romantic partners, and nobody did anything wrong."

I wish when it comes up in media, media would commit. like what was the point of dre and bow's divorce storyline on blackish when abso-fucking-lutely nothing about their relationship changed?????? i wish they had gotten divorced.
