Re: Cobra Kai

I haven't seen everything yet anon, but so far I think it's doing a pretty good take down of toxic masculinity. I'm hoping it's going to continue going in that direction and they don't wimp out.

The only sour note for me in s2 so far is the introduction of Tory and less screentime for Aisha, who I love as a character. She could have had a really interesting storyline, but I think she's a very good example of a character wasted because there are no female writers.

The cultural stuff doesn't bother me. It's Karate, people practice it in many countries outside of Japan, and each country is going to have its own spin on it and relationship with it. That's just how it goes.

AYRT
I definitely agree about the toxic masculinity and I think that is what really draws me into the show. Also the whole fatherhood angle. I was going through some stuff with my family when I got into the show, so it really hit a nerve on that level. Like, as a girl with brothers and a dad, I wish they could have showed up for me. But then seeing the way the world sets up boys and men to fail in a cruel world, ugh, the feels.

Tory, I want to like her except she's a poorly written and realized character. I get mad because she has a lot of potential but they never explore any of it. I really like Aisha too. But I feel like her best depiction was in season 1.

As an Asian person maybe it hits a little closer to home for me. I understand it not being a big deal to other people, and that is fair. I wouldn't want people to get offended just to feel some kind of validation. I get that karate is an old art and it's been used and adapted all over the world for a very long time now, but I still wish the show could give some kind of respect for The Karate Kid by having a main character be Asian like Mr. Miyagi. I wouldn't want for there to be a lost son or daughter of Mr. Miyagi because that would be cornier than needs to be for even a show like Cobra Kai, but just having a MC be Asian on some level would have helped me feel a little more seen. Because being a 2nd gen Asian American, seeing Mr. Miyagi be a prominent character in a really popular American movie meant a lot to me. If they could have carried a little torch in that way I think it would have meant so much to me even if it may seem like nothing and I get they wouldn't want to do something just for woke points.
Also, the show is set in Reseda and Reseda is a diverse place yet the show isn't really. I know there's a lot that plays into it, because I read an LA Times article on it, but I guess my hopes were a bit high because I found out that the guys who wrote "Harold and Kumar" were the creators of Cobra Kai. I loved the nuance that went into those films, especially for Harold and Kumar as Asian Americans.
Again, I love the show. I just have high expectations. LOL

I have been hoping that John Cho and/or Kal Penn will show up in a cameo or something. LOL

I've just reached the point where it looks like Johnny is gearing up to stand up to Kreese and oh yeah, oh man the feels.

Tory grates on me because I can just imagine some sleazy executive telling them to bring in another conventionally attractive girl to be Sam's rival. Aisha, I just wish we could have had more of her story and more nuance to her character. I was that big awkward bullied kid at school, so she's my favorite character by far. Not that i'm biased or anything.

Hey nonny, i'm really sorry if I came across as callous in my initial response. I can see how that would grate for sure. They've just been renewed for a fourth season haven't they? Hopefully they'll come through and you'll get some actual representation in s4.

My sentiments are similar to yours on Tory. A friend pointed out to me Aisha was right there to be the Cobra Kai girl figure but of course, has to be another conventionally attractive girl.

No worries at all! Didn't want to come off as a SJW/cancel culture vulture/woke grifter myself. LOL

I think with the Tory and Aisha it's definitely where the lack of female writers shows.

Nah it was my bad. I was being a presumptive asshole.
