Even 'royal' families here in the US did it- the Kennedys for example.
It has always had this social stigma attached to it that I think has severely hampered how we treat it. Add in how badly patients were treated in 'institutions' as well.
Locking them away in an institution may not have been the only option,even then, but it was *still* an option, as late as 50 years ago. My parents were told to institutionalize my brother, when he was born, in his mid 50s now, who has moderate Cerebral Palsy. They refused.
He does quite well on his own now.
