Re: The Gamestop/hedge fund drama

I am STUNNED by the number of people crying about the billionaires.

Don't get me wrong, it sucks to lose money no matter how rich you are, I'm not unsympathetic to that. But all the people who talk a big game about "Helping the working people on minimum wage" and "It is not possible to be a billionaire and moral" suddenly turning around like "This is violence! This is an attack! We need to stop this!"

I know WHY they're doing that. The Billionaires got their pet journos to write up bullshit about how it's the alt-right, the gamergaters, the anti-Semites, white supremacists, Trump/MAGA people.

I know why the billionaires marshalled their forces in the press, and I know why the press did exactly what they were told, but what I can't fathom is why SO MANY people are buying into it.

Journo tells you the people you hate are hurting billionaires, and suddenly billionaires are vitally important and need to be protected? When just a few short weeks ago billionaires are immoral?

I hate to be the "Wake up, sheeple" guy, but by gods it seems like there's an awful lot of sheeple out there.

Indeed, this is a great question.

As much as I don't like the alt-right, the gamergaters, the anti-Semites, white supremacists, Trump/MAGA people, I am loving this episode for what I am seeing (why would they want to make Gamestop go bankrupt anyway? Don't they employ people? Fuck 'em and their riches?) but I'm so skeptic of whatever those people do that I can't help but think there is something horrible going on.

I tend to read mainstream liberal media, and I have not seen this spin at all. Reporting has mostly just been describing what happened, what shorting is, what the shorting squeeze is, and potential concerns. I have seen nothing about the alt-right, gamergate etc. I haven't even seen them strongly call for stopping this.

Don't get me wrong, I hate billionaire and absolutely support this. But I have not seen the media spin you're talking about, specifically related to right fringe groups. Maybe I'm on different groups, but the reactions I tend to see are either people not understanding this or people supporting this.

Same. Absolutely nowhere have I seen this take.

Yeah, the only place I've seen anything linking MAGA/alt-right people to this was in memes that definitely didn't originate with journalists/the media, and I read primarily left-wing and centrist sources.

Thirding this. Wako's comment is the first place I've seen anybody imply a link between these things.
