Re: Investing discourse?

Hmmm. My knowledge is limited, but I don't invest in part for moral reasons and personal beliefs. While I am well aware that you could invest in stocks of companies who you agree with/have demonstrated social responsibility (pay fair wages, environmentally conscious, etc.), I'm also aware those stocks may not provide the returns people are looking for to make money.

It just feels like (to me) like I'm playing into the game that rich and powerful people use in order to make money off of everyone else, and something doesn't sit right about it with me (regardless if whether I make money or not off of a company like Nestle or Lockheed Martin). There is a certain level of privilege there, and with that comes a responsibility.

I don't begrudge individuals who grew up with next to nothing attempting to save money or make money in this way (anons above with 600k and 14k). I consider it from time to time. But it also requires a financial investment i can't afford (investing comes after saving, and I'm not even at a point of saving yet!).

I understand that we all function within the parameters of the current economic system, but I don't want to contribute to it anymore than I have to -- and no, i don't have the answers nor alternatives for other economic systems -- it's just who decided that this was the system by which we must operate? The writings of Enlightenment theorists? And the way it currently continues to impoverish other people and the Earth we live on? I'd rather not. I also don't want to end up bereft of anything, unable yo support myself in old age, but...
