You're right. The only possible resolution to the show was for Aang to enter the Avatar state and kill people and kick some firelord ass, and give up Katara, despite the way that love and attachment has been presented throughout the entire series and Iroh's advice (and the metaphor of his life) on choosing love over power.

Sure, it was a bit of a dues ex machina, but it stayed themeatically consistent. Watch more carefully next time, and maybe give more weight to the words of the show's moral conscience as opposed to a 2-episode feature character.

But the two-episode feature character says that Aang should give up Katara. How could he not be right? Let's harp on him forever!

I don't think that's it a totally invalid conclusion to draw, but at the same time, I think clinging to that is missing out on a part of the message of the series. Aang is about striking a delicate balance, and removing love from his life, I think, is not going to strike that balance. On top of that, there's the idea that great power corrupts, the Avatar State is dangerous, yadda yadda..

Guru Pathik's little arc didn't make that much sense to me anyway, because Roku is capable of controlling the Avatar State despite being happily married for many years.

No one understands that Pahtik wasn't telling him he couldn't LOVE Katara any longer - just that he had to let his possessive attachment to her go. Which, he didn't do, in season 3. At all. *coughEmberIslandPlayerscough*

I think what you're describing as "possessive attachment" is love--as in earthly, being-in-love-with love. He couldn't love her, according to Pahtik. The other Avatars made that same distinction. They said Pahtik was right that Aang was giving up his chance for spiritual enlightenment but also said that was right for him because he was the Avatar and the Avatar is supposed to be attached to this world. Aang remained attached to this world, and that was not a bad thing.

Re: 145

[identity profile] paperclipchains.livejournal.com 2009-01-16 10:53 pm (UTC)(link)
I agree with this, and I think that this is exactly the message - the Avatar cannot just think of themselves as an entity above the world, but needs to be grounded in its reality. It's easy to swoop in, kill Ozai, put Zuko on the throne and bask in praise and glory. What Aang chose to do was difficult, but it was what the world needed.

Re: 145

[identity profile] paperclipchains.livejournal.com 2009-01-16 10:50 pm (UTC)(link)
The show never framed their discussion like that. Iroh's response was about love, and how he was wise to choose love.

Again, I disagree with your very premise - I don't feel that Aang was ever posessive.

The stupid girl had been giving him mixed signals, IMO. She had a hot dance with him, wanted to kiss him in a love cave, kissed back in DoBS, and then tells him she's "confused." After watching a scene where Katara is flirting with Zuko and Zuko wouldn't give up his seat to Aang, what the hell was Aang supposed to think?

I'd want to know how someone felt about me too and that's why he talked to her. His kiss wasn't the smartest thing he had ever done, but notice he felt stupid after it, he beat himself up for doing it, he never pushed the issue after that and backed off to let Katara make the next move.

Seems like he handled a bad situation (albeit one he helped create) with some maturity and dignity.

Katara IMO treated Aang like the boy who she knew would always be around and took advantage of his feelings. I don't think it is Aang who is clingy. I think it is her - she needs him.

She's the one who ran away in EIP and left him hurt. So who is running from her problems, eh?

I'd join the secret poster in shipping Zutara, but honestly I think Zuko and Katara need to spend the rest of their lives alone.

That's deus ex machina. I've seen that single phrase being misspelled so many times it's making me batty.

I'm not saying it should have been all gory death, being a kid's show; I'm just saying they should have given a more realistic approach to the ending solution. Ozai and Azula are both threats while alive, even without sanity or bending ability.

Re: 145

[identity profile] sistermagpie.livejournal.com 2009-01-16 10:45 pm (UTC)(link)
I thought that ending--despite the deus ex machina (easy to make a typo there when you're going fast) of the turtle teaching Aang to spirit-bend--was perfectly realistic within the unrealistic bounds of the show. I didn't think they were threats at the end at all. They were both metaphorically killed, deprived of the sources of their power. Sure I can see somebody doing a fic where they rise again and start trouble but I didn't fear that that would happen at the end of the show.

Re: 145

[identity profile] paperclipchains.livejournal.com 2009-01-16 10:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Whoops, my mistake.

And no they're not. Aang goes a long way to winning "hearts and mind" of the Fire Nation by refusing to kill its leaders, in my opinion. I think he'd have to deal with LESS rebellion that way. On top of that, a pacifistic alternative is nice in a television show every once in a while. If kids want shows that tell them that the only sensible, realistic way to solve a problem like that is by murder, they have a whole host of alternatives, but frankly I find the premise itself to be flawed.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA. Avatar is aimed at 7-12 year olds. Realism my ass. Your expectations are what's unrealistic.
