Favorite Big Dumb Pop Songs

What are your favorite Big Dumb Pop Songs? Anything from one hit wonders to oldies to alternative pop as long as you, in your own judgment, thing its big and dumb and great. Whether that's I Wanna Dance With Somebody or Come On Eileen or Carly Rae Jepsen

Literally listened to Whitney earlier!

Carly Rae Jepsen's Call Me Maybe is a total guilty pleasure listen.

Been listening to a lot of 90s Britpop recently too.

I honestly think that Carly Rae Jepsen was EXTREMELY good. But she is one of those artists that lost her shine for me when she started being widely regarded as a "pop" artist. I feel the same about Ellie Goulding.

Someone I know out me on to Carly Rae Jepsen's Émotion Side B album and I just love it. It's in all sincereness a solid pop album. Dance and sing along, even to the sad songs

I do love "Come On Eileen." "Since U Been Gone" is like The Perfect Pop Song in my opinion. Also a big fan of "No Tears Left to Cry," which is weird since I don't really like anything else Ariana Grande has done.

"Dear Future Husband". It's such a dumb song, but man is it fun to dance to.

California Gurls by Katy Perry. Especially the video, with Snoop Dogg and the whipped cream boob cannons.

Even though I'm not a fan of Katy Perry, I absolutely love that song - right alongside 'Hot n Cold' and 'Teenage Dream'.

don't leave me this way by thelma houston. my favorite type of pop: upbeat which is a cover for some darker sentiment, lol. so...call you girlfriend by robyn too

Don't Leave Me This Way is a monumental classic, one of the great songs ever written, beyond the shadow of a doubt, also tremendously sad for historical reasons.

I think part of me prefers the Communards cover from the 1980s, even though it's not nearly as much of a classic, and probably not as good. Partly, there's really not a lot of songs that fulfill my love of a lower-voiced female singer dueting with a higher-pitched male singer. And partly, it doesn't make me think as much about the historical associations, so I can just belt it.

Oh yes, the Communards cover is played on the daily here in my house, not even kidding. Actually I have to say The Communards were pretty good even if just a cover band IMO.

my household was just black, and traditionally so, so I hadn't even heard about its importance to the 1980s lgbt community, thank you for the info!

The Communards' cover kicks ass. I will dance like a maniac to that version :D.

Call Me Maybe
Bad Romance
Since U Been Gone
Dr. Jones
Hot n' Cold (and Teenage Dream, but only because of the beautiful way that Glee made it queer)
You Belong With Me (imo Blank Space and Cruel Summer have too much substance to quite fit this category, despite being A+ pop songs.)
Total Eclipse Of The Heart

Summer Girls, though a strong case has been made for Summer Girls having actually been a lot more innovative and cool than it was originally given credit for, so IDK if it really fits this category.

Does Uptown Funk count? Or is it too cool and too funk to be considered a big dumb pop song?

I'm also going to assume everything by Lorde is too cool and distinctive to be in this category. Same with Dancing On My Own by Robyn.

SA - I thought of two more

(Anonymous) 2021-02-02 01:59 am (UTC)(link)
Closer by The Chainsmokers
Want U Back by Cher Lloyd (major guilty pleasure)

Oh, man, I looooooved Want U Back. It's so stupid but I just like it

I wonder what's big and dumb? I don't think Bruno Mars' or Adele's or Lady Gaga's biggest songs are "dumb" but they were certainly big and I still like them. Oh, and also: The Weeknd - Blinding Lights, I love that too lately.

But then, there are songs like
Madonna - Material Girl
Britney Spears - Toxic
Icona Pop - I Love It
What Does The Fox Say? (trust me on this one.)
Spice Girls - Wannabe
Doja Cat - Juicy

That I PHYSICALLY CANNOT SKIP, and maybe I should be more ashamed of these. Maybe.

The kind of thing that you would belt the lyrics to on the dance floor, I guess

Oh, I just thought of Queen - I Want To Break Free while listening to my own list and maybe I Kissed A Girl if I absolutely had to go for a Katy Perry song? Not sure if there's a pattern here.

Hell, yeah, "Wannabe". You can't go wrong with the Spice Girls in general, really.

Too many to list. I honestly love big dumb pop music a lot. I have a weirdly broad variety of loves when it comes to music. I also love a lot of heavy metal and rock as well as hip hop and classical and everything between. But pop is great and I feel no shame about loving it.

Well uh... the Beatles are just about my favorite band ever, and their early stuff is mostly big dumb pop songs. Paul kinda continued in that vein, and while I like John and George's stuff better normally, Paul does big dumb pop songs really well.

Modern era... actually I barely listen to anything that could be called pop really. Was surprised at how much I liked "Bad Romance" when I listened to it solely because of all the memes it launched, hahah. Part of it may be that it's like exactly in my vocal range for karaoke, which almost never happens with female artists.
