TAXES!!!

(Anonymous) 2021-02-03 12:31 am (UTC)(link)
We all love them, right?

What kind of tax filer are you? Do you do it yourself or do you have a guy? Do you already got it done or do you wait until the last minute?

I did mine today and only got about $300 back due to being unemployed last year.

I usually do them in late March or early April using one of the online auto filer thingies

I really generally just want to devote as little time and energy to them as possible

I do mine as soon as all my paperwork comes in. I used to go to a lady, but I learned I could do everything she was doing for free and now I do them myself.

For anyone filing: Remember to use the IRS Free File affiliates to file for free. https://www.irs.gov/filing/free-file-do-your-federal-taxes-for-free

One of my gigs is in my country, so they just gave me the relevant information (address, business code) and I put it in.

The OTHER one is based overseas, and we don't HAVE To file it, but I prefer to, to be safe, but I can't DO that with the free version of TurboTax OR H&R block. I have to have 67$ taken out of my refund for someone else to just plug some numbers in.

I'm glad my refund would be that high, last year it was only 10$, but damn.

I don't have to do anything. Our tax office puts nowadays all the tax information on their online service and I just have to check that everything is correct before the due date. Most years I haven't needed to add anything.

I always put the papers aside as soon as they arrive and think "I'll do them today after work" ...and then wind up forgetting until the last day.

Last few years I did it online through Credit Karma, specifically because the first time I just did it to more or less check my work, but Credit Karma had me getting a couple hundred back instead of owing a hundred, so I looked into it, and they found a credit I got for having an IRA through my workplace or something (which I wasn't even aware of, much less that it mattered?) and then they also said I didn't make enough money that I was required to pay the penalty for not having health insurance coverage, so there went that charge.

So well, I think I'm gonna trust them to find stuff that isn't right on the 1040-EZ.

Do it for free on the H&R Block website, as my W2 is extremely simple. Just me and my kittes. :D

Do it myself. I used Turbotax until I found out they were being shady. I use TaxAct now. Or something else the IRS approves of and gives it to me for free because I'm not above the pay grade

Free File USA! I am pretty poor so I qualify, fed is free and state is only 12.95.

I'm self-employed and do vendor shows (well, except for 2020) but also have a retail job on the side so I thought I needed an accountant and help and it would be too complicated but it's actually not. Freefile walks you through every step and helps you find any potential deductions, not that there are many right now. The only hard part for me is setting up my spreadsheets of income and expenses for the business but I would have to do that before submitting them to an accountant anyway. Saving hundreds of dollars because an online free system will do the hard part for me is great.

I only just got my W2s today (the normal time) so no, of course I don't have them done. Am going to try to get them done eatly this year, though.

I'm pretty slow about filing this year (normally as soon as I can access my forms I do it) but I'm all about Free File USA.
