You're not wrong. Umineko was so far up it's own butt. At least it was pretty, though.

I'm reading Umineko no koro ni now, and yeah. They don't have the same charm at all. The only one I like is Jessica, and even then I think it's because she sounds so much like Mion. All the adults are unlikable, the servants are one-note, Maria's fun but nine?? He wrote these great 11 year olds in Higurashi, and then Maria acts like she's four at the most. Georg is a snore. His romance is a snore. And Battler has none of K1's wit and his personality is all over the place, he's just does what the story wants him to do. Beatrice too.

Plus Battler's not even set up to like these people he's known for two days and somewhat was 12 so the stakes aren't even there. The mystery is fun but watching those idiots try to solve it is a drag. Hopefully it gets better.

And then Gou just stepped it's shit up and got amazing so that's even harder to compare too.

Yeah, I'm right there with you. Jessica is one of the only Umineko characters I can bring myself to care about, and that's exactly because she's just like Mion, who is one of my favorites in Higurashi. None of the romances really appealed to me in Umineko, whereas I was deeply invested in Tomitake/Takano and Keiichi/Mion in Higurashi, and Gou has me invested in Satoko/Rika as well.

Umineko also has way too many characters who you could just remove and not impact the overall story that much, which makes it hard to care that much about them.
