Here "chips" means "square cut long bits of (usually) potato that can be served as a part of a meal, called "french fries" in America.
In America "chips" means "crispy thin slices of (usually) potato, often flavoured, sold in packets as snacks, not usually part of a meal." Here, in the UK, we call those crisps.
So which definition is it?
