LOL, your experience with fanfic is different from mine. I mean sure yeah, theoretically it's about things that the characters could have done if the circumstances had presented themselves. But it feels like most of the fics I see are about two or more characters fucking, regardless of whether or not they had the opportunity or desire in canon, or whether their personalities made such a thing likely, and nobody considers that OOC.

I've been in a lot of fandoms and read a lot of smut, and I can honestly say that the majority of the fic I've seen tries to keep the characters personalities intact while they're fucking. Otherwise, there would be no point to reading or writing fanfic about specific characters in the first place.

This has largely been my experience as well. However, some fandoms do go pretty heavy on the "these characters are just a vehicle for porn" approach to fanfic. My current OTP happens to be a pairing that gets a TON of that kind of fic, where there's no plot and no characterization to speak of, just maybe a couple hundred words of hand-wavey set up, and then right into the kinky fucking. It was a bit of a rude awakening when I first got into the fandom, because I don't vibe with that kind of content at all.
