103-Every generation needs its own all-star terrible Alice in Wonderland. So being terrible is good. That said, I don't know how one would really destroy the character of the Mad Hatter. He's not exactly a character, I mean, not like a three-dimensional person. As long as you've got the costume and say the things he says you've got it imo.

108-Steve Carrell played the leading Proustian scholar in America and I bought him.

112-Oh yeah, that's a realistic fear there. That all those amazingly talented white actors known for their brilliant performances they were going to cast will be pushed aside for no-talent Asians./sarcasm

128-Wow, that's...ridiculous.

133-I assume you know one had nothing to do with each other.

137-I can see how that would make it hard to watch the character. I hate it when that happens.

141-Whoa. So Sam was a very late bloomer, then?

154-Yup, totally thought it was Hetalia!

I disagree. The Disney!Hatter, for one, was a far cry from the original Carroll! Hatter. Actually, most Hatters have been a far cry from the book because most of them have gone the more silly and wacky route, whereas the original Hatter was mad, but not really silly.

Very true. I've always preferred the one in the book--I just don't feel like he's really ruined by these other versions.

Yeah, to say the other versions ruin him is a bit extreme, but there are definitely some interpertations that are just. Worse than others. I would say, though, that it's hard for just one character in that series to ever really be ruined, because they are always reworked to fit the nature of the overall adaption. Like the Disney!Hatter, while not the same as the book!Hatter, fit in perfectly with the mood of the film.

Agreed. Also, I am tired of the same wacky top hat, crazy suit look. He's insane, not a circus clown. Also, he's a Hat maker. That doesn't mean he has to wear a top hat. In the story, the writer never describes Hatter's outfit at all except for that fact that he wear A hat. Not a top hat. Not a cap. Not a derby. Just a hat.

I would love to see a Hatter done up in a Victorian pin stripe trouser, dark gray waistcoat, crisp white shirt with rolled up sleeves (he is blue collar after all) and a derby.

Maybe then if you erase the mental image of what most people have of the Hatter, you can go back to the story's roots.

Well, to be fair, in all the art I've seen for the novel, including the original illustrations, the Hatter did have a top hat.

Everyone has based Hatter's look off of John Tenniels' work which wasn't the choice of Lewis Carroll but of his publishers. He didn't have a say so on how the characters were going to look like. In fact, Lewis Carroll had his own set of drawings for his first rough draft. Tenniel on the other hand, copied from his own previous works (Punch) for the character illustrations for the book. This displeased Carroll so.

For this reason, I believe that Hatter's look is still open for interpretation.

I've never actually seen Carroll's art, though I do remember hearing about that. Is there anywhere to see his illustrations?

I did a bit of searching and here you go.</a. Alice is not even blond and the Griffin doesn't even have wings. (http://www.conradaskland.com/blog/2007/05/alice-in-wonderland-original-drawings/)

You know, it's actually weird how many characters from MANY different books have had the general perception of them shaped by a movie. Where to even start? (I'm sure there was a TVtropes page about that, but I don't remember what it was called)
