In the book Hatter's "madness" exhibited itself in a slight impulse control problem (pouring tea on dormouse) but he's really no more or less whacked then any other Wonderlander. the language and behavior of almost all the wonderland/looking-glass characters is based on word play, poetry, riddles etc.

As for the outfits, I tend to love the big bow the original one had and love rich colors so I can be guilty of drawing him like that*, but if the one Johnny is dressed as is that...foofy in the final version, I'll be a bit disappointed.

Aw, I like that painting. But, yeah, the final version of Burton is not good. He looks like the love child of Holly Hobby and Carrot Top. Yeesh.

See, I've always wanted a working class Hatter because that's what a Hatter was. Since the story takes place during Victorian times, I want black pin stripe trousers, a dark gray waistcoat, white shirt with rolled up sleeves. The type of style you see tailors wear. And for a hat, I would love a derby because no one would think about putting a derby on him.

Basically, I want him to look like a Victorian hat maker. Only insane.

So like, DRAW IT.

I will always picture him weird, (and with a Top hat) as it IS wonderland after all. But it's an idea worth pursuing. DOOOO EEEET.

Hmmmm...let me see what I can do.

But they WERE insane :) They used to cure hats in mercury, so hatters tended to get mercury poisoning - and the "madness" was just that symptom. Though, the Mad Hatter doesn't exactly exhibit the symptoms of mercury poisoning.

Personally, I'm just disappointed that it doesn't look like Burton's film is really going to reflect the "feel" of the book. I don't think any films have.

True, though not all of them were insane, of course. Just enough to make the idiom "Mad as a hatter". I mean, who goes into a profession knowing that sooner or later you are going to crack like a nut?

My problem with the movies is that they almost always gloss over the poems and the fact that the book is a Victorian book, therefore the movie should be very Victorian as well. I mean, how many movies versions have you seen where they even have English accents?

Yeah, I know they weren't actually "insane" XD

I can honestly say that I've never seen an Alice in Wonderland movie that I actually liked and felt reflected the books adequately. And you're very right about them glossing over the poems! I love those poems =(
Honestly, I wasn't entirely sure how I felt about Tim Burton making this movie in the first place - I thought it could be interesting, but now I'm not sure I'll like it.
