Personally? Yes: 30% for the weird philosophical/theological/psychological conversations about violence and evil and 50% for the aesthetics and cinematography. (I guess the other 20% actually was for the fucked up emotional dynamics between Will and Hannibal)

DA

Caveat: the philosophy and aesthetics are also an excellent reason to be cautious of the show, because I've never seen any television show hit as many phobias in one sitting before. All gorgeously shot and realised in exquisite detail.

Caveat brought to you by the pyrophobe who watched the episode where someone gorgeously burns to death in a clear plastic box (oxygen tank) and whose sister watched the episode with the beehives and had to nope the hell out also.

The show is just so weird and extra in terms of the gorgeous, gruesome imagery that comes up, and the topics it deals with (another friend was triggered massively by the whole encephalitis thing and Hannibal's use of same), that there's a fairly high risk for a surprisingly wide range of triggers.

Like, it's gorgeous, but you're almost guaranteed to run into something that will fuck you right up, you know?

AYRT, yes, well said!

Did, indeed, fuck me up. We just rewatched this and it’s gorgeous, but holy crap it’s fucking gruesome. On my first watch, we didn’t have kids. But now we do. And I just. Could not. Handle it.

Yep. There's definitely moments that make you go "holy shit"

Re: the encephalitis thing

At the time I was dealing with not knowing what my weird brain stuff was (turned out to be MS but anyway...) and watching what Will was going through was....very uncomfortable. I don’t think I’ve ever related so strongly to a fictional character before.

And I still remember him talking about a “scream perched under [his] chin” and it’s like yep, know what you mean, bro.

Still enjoyed watching the show (the first season anyway, I started to get fed up with some things in the second one and gave up in the third on the first ep) but that was something. I haven’t given it a re-watch, I wonder how I’d feel now.

Aesthetics and "elevated conversation" (for a show on its network, given the time etc.) was exactly why I got into this show at first. The messed up dynamic were just a "treat". Although apparently there's some really funny Hannibal memes out there.
