Just a nitpick - plagiarism isn't defined by whether or not you made money off of it. That's a common misconception. If I take an excerpt from a book and use it in a paper for a college class without citing the source and making it clear that those aren't my words, that's plagiarism.

Well yeah, true. But even then all fanfic, even straight up canon stories written by some hardcore fan, are plagiarism, and if OP thinks they can't write a crossover because of plagiarism, they shouldn't be writing at all, lol.

You're confused about what plagiarism means and should probably stop giving people advice on what is or isn't plagiarism. Fanfic using someone else's characters that's written without the permission of the copyright holder is copyright infringement*, which isn't the same thing as plagiarism. Whether or not you made money off of it is irrelevant in determining copyright infringement and plagiarism. It would make it more likely that you'd be caught and might face legal repercussions, however.

For example, if I write a long Star Wars fanfic and post it on AO3, that's technically copyright infringement, but I'm unlikely to get in any serious trouble. If I self publish my fic on Amazon and don't even try to file off the serial numbers, it's also copyright infringement and I'm far more likely to be contacted by Disney's lawyers and told to take it down OR ELSE.

* And even this is still up for debate.
