That has to be tough, OP. IMO Don't be too hard on yourself so long as you don't excuse Manson's actions. Hard place to be as a consumer when you find out a creator turns out to be a terrible abuser.

This is how I feel about Buffy. That show has meant a lot to me, and I just can't bring myself to give it up. Most of Whedon's stuff really, but especially Buffy.

Sort of the same with Harry Potter. I've already given up the books, but I still read fic sometimes and I still involve the universe in my own fantasies that I make up.

I think it is okay to separate the creator and the creation. Not everyone can do that, but I don't think you have to give up everything a bad creator did as long as you acknowledge the creator was/is an awful person and that you are liking the stuff in spite of who created it. And I'd also say don't buy the stuff so you don't give the awful creator any more money.

I feel like with TV it's a lot more collaborative than people credit, so Buffy is a good case for liking the show in spite of the showrunner. (Which may have actually happened given the talent Whedon burned.)

Buffy had this amazing writer's room and plenty of stuff people liked about the show weren't actually Whedon's ideas

I definitely feel this. Some of his old music was so important to me getting through some bad years of high school.

(Anonymous) 2021-02-13 01:41 am (UTC)(link)
His music was never part of my collection, but I immediately recalled fond memories tied to it from school - a tongue-in-cheek goth talent show routine at a summer camp done to his cover of “Sweet Dreams”, a hs friend who was an unabashed fan and later wrote music heavily influenced by him, etc. I don’t want to cast a shadow on those memories.

This is totally understandable and if anyone gives you any hassle over it, I think that's some major BS.

Hell, I am zero percent goth, and know very little of MM's music, but since the news broke about him, I have found myself thinking, "Are his covers of Sweet Dreams and Tainted Love ruined, now? Should I take them off my Halloween mix?" But I didn't take them off.

Any attempted cover of Tainted Love is automatically ruined. Marc Almond or nothing.

well, that too is a cover (and i actually think the 60s original is kinda awesome), lol, but it's a great one!

I have a couple of friends who faced similar with lostprophets (absolutely, 100% no going back horrible for anyone who might not know the story. The rest of the band were utterly broken by it.) I was never a fan of them or MM so I don't have the same attachment but I get it because there is stuff I DO consume where one or more of the creators are dodgy af or even worse.

Some things I can't listen to/watch/whatever again...other things I struggle because of what it means to me or made me feel at the time.

I take the attitude that it isn't up to me how other people process all this stuff. It's quite a thing to navigate and it isn't always going to be easy to let go.

Well, you probably already own his albums, right? So it's not like you're giving him more money in the future.

(Anonymous) 2021-02-13 02:51 am (UTC)(link)
I feel the same way. The tryptic albums always meant a lot to me and they still do. I'm not excusing his actions, and I'm glad he's facing consequences, but those three albums will always mean a lot to me.

Do you have a moment to hear the word of our Lord of Lard, the Mighty Swine (https://pigindustries.bandcamp.com/)? Similar aesthetic to Marilyn Manson but as far as I've ever heard, a much nicer guy.

half of the songs of my childhood, and therefore my mother's adulthood since i listen to her stations, were made by misogynist violent assholes, so I feel you. Honestly, I try not to give money or otherwise promote the artist to people who are unfamiliar, but I still and will continue to listen.

Rape is still rape, but you can't accuse someone of it if you don't let them know what you were feeling at the time. Kinks can be problematic for this exact reason.
