American Girl’s Girl of the Year doll (basically their star doll) for 2017 was officially Gabriela McBride, but it was actually supposed to be Tenney Grant. Tenney had all the hallmarks of a GOTY (corporate partnerships, a unique feature [her hand was molded differently to hold a guitar pick], a cohesive collection, and her mini doll had a “Girl of the Year” sticker), but they hastily made her a contemporary character and threw together a slapdash collection for Gabriela (who was a redressed Truly Me doll with no unique features until later on) because they were getting flack for not having a black GOTY in their lineup.
