NSFW secret- TW rape

(Anonymous) 2021-02-14 02:53 am (UTC)(link)

My Buffyverse secret is that I think Spike was objectively morally better than Angel. He went good by choice and chose to get his soul back. Angel had his soul forced on him. Twice. Every time his soul was taken away he went evil again. And frankly his soulless self was far more evil than Spike at his evillest. Yes, there is the attempted rape of Buffy thing, but I pretend that didn't happen because it was badly written and out of character for Spike who always even at his worst was at the beck and call of the woman he loved at that moment. Soulless Angel is the one who I could see raping someone.

If we're comparing souled!Spike and souled!Angel, then I agree. I think they were both very decent, but Spike was the stronger person IMO.

If we're comparing souled!Angel with soulless!Spike, then Angel was definitely the better person by a long ways.

If we're comparing both of them soulless, then yeah, Spike was...less evil? I mean, still a mass murderer, but not the sucking black hole of evil that Angelus was.

As for the rape thing, I mean, yeah, Angelus would rape anyone at any time and delight in their helplessness and misery. That said, I don't actually think what Spike did was OOC. He and Buffy's sexual relationship was profoundly fucked up from square one in a way that was confusing and crossed a lot of lines. That's not to say Spike doesn't bear full responsibility for attempted rape, or that Buffy bears any blame at all for his actions. It's just to say, his drunken belief that he can make Buffy want him again doesn't come out of nowhere. Buffy denied and protested and fought him the entire time they were fucking, but when he pushed her, she'd give in because she did want him, and often she'd become the aggressor. It makes narrative sense that Spike, totally wasted and not exactly strong on moral fiber to begin with, doesn't recognize (and doesn't want to recognize) that this time no means no.
