I get where you're coming from, but it depends a lot on the execution for me - sometimes mentioning things can be really embarrassing if it's done in an embarrassing way, sometimes it can be really good. And partly for that reason (also kinda just generally) I'm really curious what urban fantasy book it was, because it can make a huge difference.

That said, I don't think it's anything wrong to get embarrassed about stuff like that. It's unfortunate - like, personally, I hate that feeling of getting embarrassed - but you're not doing anything wrong, it's just a feeling.
