This sounds kinda dumb, but why would it be cultural appropriation? Haven’t people over the world braided their hair in various styles for centuries?

(Anonymous) 2021-02-14 08:10 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes, yes they have.

Every culture had some sort of weaving, and people probably weaved their own hair into braids before figuring out how to card wool, because it's something to do with your hands when you're sitting around digesting a meal.

I think OP is conflating the general concept of braids with more culturally-specific things like dreadlocks

(Anonymous) 2021-02-14 08:21 pm (UTC)(link)
And by conflating you mean having a kneejerk reaction where they assumed the worst without even a microsecond of thought to fact checking themselves.

(Anonymous) 2021-02-14 08:25 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't know what was in OP's mind when they conflated those things, and I don't really think you do either, no matter how angry you seem to be about it

I just get tired of these people. In their endless push for some kind of ill defined sense of wokeness, they instead manage to exist in a perpetual ignorance of the world in general.

My advice is to be more aggressive in filtering the kinds of people you see on social media. There's an infinite sea of idiots of all kinds out there.

(to be clear, I'm not calling OP an idiot, because I don't know whether it was an innocent mistake or what)

(Anonymous) 2021-02-14 09:34 pm (UTC)(link)
This. Like really.

(Anonymous) 2021-02-14 08:14 pm (UTC)(link)
Try millenia, possibly dozens of millenia world over that cultures have been braiding their hair. There's no cultural appropriation here, it's just someone else was using the Tumblr braincell when OP wrote this.

Exactly.Braids are universal, just as is braiding threads to make rope. OP is probably just trying to avoid some dumb person having a go.
