I don't know which series this is but that character looks like he's supposed to be a Hu person, so basically one of the very many, often nomadic tribes that were not Han Chinese. And they had and still have plenty of braiding in their hairstyles, that's why this kind of hairstyle usually gets used as a very obvious signifier in historical/fantasy dramas.
It actually might be a mild case of cultural appropriation or racism depending on how this is treated in this show in particular, but it's not the kind you think it is.

Now here is someone actually assuming whatever the OP "thought" it was lol. Maybe they just watch historical C-dramas enough to have an uncertain feeling that it's culturally appropriative, maybe...?

Yeah, that doesn't make sense though. If they watched many C-dramas, they'd know this kind of hairstyle and could pinpoint why they think it would be CA, not have a vague kinda sorta feeling that it might be. So yes, I'm pretty sure my assumption is correct and that you give OP way too much credit.
