129) Zuko is a fan favorite and Katara is the main female that's of shipping age, some people like the Romeo+Juliet aspect too. It's like...(I don't know if you've ever read Harry potter)...Draco/Hermione, for example. Kataang can squick a lot of shippers since Aang is 12 and if you ever met a 12 year old boy that's pretty damn young. Hth.

Stop comparing zutara to that. Draco is nothing but a wet fish, Zuko has decent characterization and it was obvious from the first series he was going to end up on the right side at some point.

His point still stands. At the very beginnings of the fandom there were plenty of people who shipped Zuko and Katara simply because they were the Dark Male and the Main Female.

Haha, well a lot of people (especially D/Hr shippers) thought Draco was a snarky misunderstood genius who would turn good too...less people, of course, than those who thought (correctly) that Zuko was just misunderstood and would turn good, and that's probably why there are more Zutara shippers.

They are both totally fine ships, but I think it's fair to say that people are still drawn to the ideas behind these ships rather than the interactions between the characters, and that Kataang, even though it has the interaction, still has a bit of a handicap given the fact that Aang hasn't hit puberty yet...both these factors lead to Zutara's popularity.

Actually, I have never met a twelve year old boy who had epic world changing powers and who had to lead people into the battle to save the world and who had to fight and defeat a man 30+ years older than him and take the burdens of the world on his young shoulders.

And attempt to have some sort of normalcy and grow up.

Aang is a very spiritual person. The idea that he fell in love is not odd, especially since it is with a girl who is a mere two years old, who he has an amazingly strong connection with.

Aang seems to be able to love without conditions and reserve. He is not afraid of commitment or his feelings. A lot of supposedly mature adults can't even love like that.

Haha, a lot of kids actually can love without conditions or reserve, it's only as adults that we start to harden ourselves in that way.

I wasn't trying to insult Aang, I'm just pointing out that he is really, really young. Sure, he will fall in love with a girl like Katara...but some people when writing romance fic or whatever, prefer shipping either teenagers or adults, just because prepubescent children squick them.

But by the same token, I find the romance stories featuring romantically-inexperienced 14 year old Katara with Zuko to be squicky.

She's no paragon of maturity or romantic experience. Actually none of them with the exception of Sokka is. And that includes Zuko.

I'm not sure what you are trying to say here. People are squicked by a lot of things, of course, and one of the main squicks/complaints I see with Kataang in particular is that Aang is still a prepubescent kid and Katara is a teenager already well into puberty.

Katara and Aang are pretty mature for their respective ages I think, though ymmv.

But Katara is only 14- it's a two year difference. 14 isn't very sexy or adult, either...

Girls mature faster than boys do. 14 isn't quite adult but it is teenaged: Katara is well into puberty and she acts/looks the part. Aang...is prepubescent. So for some people it can squick.

I personally thought the couple was interesting, though I preferred Aang with On Ji (I think her name was?).

on ji reminded me physically of Chihiro from "Spirited Away."
