129) A lot of fans decided very early on that Zuko's redemption arc would center around Katara, due in part to "The Waterbending Scroll" and "The Siege of the North" as far as I can tell. After that expectation was established, subsequent turns of events were seen and interpreted through that lens -- Zuko and Katara's talk in the crystal catacombs, the Guru's insistence that Aang would have to "give up" Katara to master the Avatar State, even the fact that Mai discouraged Zuko from moping around were all seen as "foreshadowing" of an inevitable romance between Zuko and Katara. Once Zutara fans started on that path, essentially, they were watching a different show. Unfortunately, that meant that large swaths of the show as it actually existed seemed to them to be some combination of dull, nonsensical and disappointing.

IT IS ACTUALLY A VERY SAD TALE. :(

Though I would point out that the incredibly bad behavior of an active minority of Zutara shippers means my sympathies are pretty damn limited at this point.

Both! In your mind, it really sounds like nothing, but on paper? Man.

It is very sad. I feel that those fans missed out on some of the things that made Avatar great.

And I agree with your last statement. They demand respect and consideration for their ship, beliefs, and preferences but fail to give the same for the other ships.

It's nice that you know the reasoning of all zutara fans. People couldn't possibly just ship it for fun and because they like the dynamic of zutara better than kataang.

This makes me sad, because you are obviously a fellow trek fan, and I want to love you for that :(

Whenever you're talking about a huge and diverse group of people, which the Zutara fandom certainly is, there's going to be a lot of variation within it. What I'm talking about are the larger trends that I, as an outsider looking in, noticed. I've actually read most of the "mega fics" for that ship and spent a lot of time reading through people's arguments for it, and what I've described above seems to be at the core of most of what goes on in that part of fandom.

Of course you can have your own reasons. But the OP was asking about Fandom Trends at Large, and so that's what I concentrated on.
