You'd be surprised how many people don't care if you're 20 or 50 or even 100 lbs more than Jessica Simpson if you're generally well-groomed and make an effort to look your best... and have a brain in your head. Really? Because my experience with them at conventions has been nothing but friendly and wonderful.

I've never been to conventions or anything -- my interest in the show is not actually THAT great. It entertains me, so I have the original series DVDs and I've read a few novels based on it. Actually really loved the Crucible series, seriously... those were incredibly good. My sole experience with Trekkies, though, comes from forums. It's like they troll themselves.

I met a woman at SDCC '08 that costumes Klingon weddings and, damnit, she was the sweetest damn person I've ever met.

I've met a lot of Trekkies (my mom is one) growing up, and all of them were completely normal people. In fact, Star Trek has one of the most normal fanbases I've ever seen. These aren't people living in their mother's basements, they're productive (sometimes professional) members of society.

It also helps that the fandom is pretty old.

This. I've met quite a few through my mother as well. And the stereotype is largely untrue. Are there a few out there that fit that description? Probably. But the majority are definitely not like that.

Most Trekkies grew up watching the show, and continued with living normal lives. The ones that live in their mother's basements aren't the majority, they're just the most vocal and obnoxious.

On Trekkies, I've only met a few and they were cool, I've never met one online really. But I'm sure like any fandom there are tons of weirdos.

I don't just not like it. I also don't get it. Like, seriously. Because so many friends of mine like it, I did TRY watching it once, when some channel had an all-day marathon and I had a day off. The entire time, I was sitting there thinking What the fuck is going on? Also: People with random superpowers is kind of a lame plot foundation and I want to kill that fucking cheerleader with a side-order of Why did they just do that? Why does anybody CARE?? Apparently this is a big deal... wait... who the hell is that? I've never seen her before, why does anybody care? WHAT THE HELL.

So yeah. Difficult-to-follow WAY overly drawn-out plot, generally unappealing characters (to me), and the whole superhero thing I don't care for much to begin with. BLAH.

As for online Trekkies: I would advise you to avoid at all costs the official forums. They are a den of vile venomous viscera.

You don't have to like it or "get" it. Just ignore it. Leave people who do like it, and do get it, the fuck alone. You and all the other elitest halfwits.

I didn't like it from the pilot. I honestly thought it wasn't going to last long, because I just thought the acting was horrible and the story was weak. I tried it a few more times, and it could never grab my attention or make me care. I have a lot of friends that like it too, so it's <.< annoying. But whatever, I don't hate on them FOR liking it.
