On 101, I have had three of some of the most caring best friends a person could hope to have, and two I've never met in person. I met them through fandom, but our friendships are much deeper than that and they have helped me through so much and I am truly grateful to have them in my life. Maybe it's not as deep as I think? I don't know, could be, same with people who are "RL" friends. I had a best friend for 11 years and we just drifted apart. I thought that was a deep and lasting friendship. A friendship isn't defined by location.

Fandom friends come and go, but if a friendship goes beyond that, then I don't see why that's less valid than two people that are friends off the internet.

Fair enough. I can't say it changes my mind, but I'm glad to hear you've found people who you can be friends with at that level.

As for friendships and location, I agree. This isn't about location, though; it's about the limitations of a medium people use to converse with each other. I'd be just as skeptical of a friendship based on phone conversations or letters because it's harder to lie to a person's face than it is in letters or IMs or phone calls.
