I actually used to like some of the stuff that fandom produced until the last bit of season 3 and the finale came out. Then it just got unbearable and everytime someone mentions the ship now I cringe because it no longer represents a fun ship or an interesting alternative to the canon, but one whose basis seems to be built on degrading canon and ridiculing Aang and Mai.
The fans saw what they wanted and exaggerated it.
The canon relationships (particularly Aang and Katara's) were built on things like communication, friendship, unconditional love, etc. And while unfortunately the fandom has deemed those things out of fashion. I found them refreshing and wonderful.
