From what I heard, the protest organizers made that it was the truth, not a theory, and that they altered the comic as make to look bad. That worries me.

(Anonymous) 2009-01-20 09:09 am (UTC)(link)
Could you give me the link? I can't find the altered strip.

Diff anon.

(Anonymous) 2009-01-20 12:59 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't have a link, but I don't think they altered it exactly, they just took it out of context. Often one story/gag/point has three, four or more strips within in it. They took out one of those sub-strips and also removed one of the panels from that strip and so it lost all context and meaning. Add to that, the webpage the strip comes from also often has extra historical info, which was also lost. The news also used fanart while making their point (not sure if it is depressing or reassuring to know that the news the world over kind of sucks.)

Also, taking one country out of Hetalia and saying it's bad and there for anti-(insert country) is also missing the point. I don't know if that has happened as well, but I think it would be very easy for people who are not fans to see Hetalia as anti-(country) if they haven't really seen just how all the other countries are portrayed. I know when I saw my country I flipped out a bit, but as I read more it seemed ok to me because he isn't singling out any country as outright good or bad (including Japan, who as had cute scenes, funny scenes, and scenes were he is a bastard.)

But I know there is history there (no pun intended), so it all gets murky.

I found, and watched the news clip. The thing is, I don't think they are really "taking it out of context" or "missing the point", since their point is that Korea is portrayed as a country that carries Japan's flag around and gropes Japan's breasts, which is...true.

About the Dokdo/Takeshima problem, they didn't say that's what it was, just that it could be suspected so. And you know, I don't think they could tell the difference between official art and fanart. I'm not trying to advocate them; this is clearly the headdesk moment. The understanding of subculture in Korea (or the lack thereof) can be astounding.

As you know, there's history involved here. Considering the portrayal of countries are based on their stereotypes perceived by a Japanese person, I'm afraid it goes beyond "flipping out a bit". Yes, Koreans are very easily offended by this kind of thing, probably because the Japanese colonization of Korea was a cultural genocide.

The news thing was just about the fanart. The strip was somewhere else.

Not that I think the strip thing is just a rumor or anything, but I really can't find it.

Re: Diff anon.

I think the point the anon was making in that last paragraph was that Hetalia isn't anti-Korean (though it could be perceived that way if only the Korean character was talked about) even if they find it offensive. Whether due to historical or present day problems.

I've seen some comments that Hetalia is anti-Korean, which implies Korea is being targeted. It's not. This isn't a 'they shouldn't be offended comment'. I can see why they are, I believe the anon above can as well. It's just some of the accusations against the author are incorrect.

Also, you don't where the above anon is from or what their country/culture has been through, and that 'flipped out' comment could be about something serious. Some people work from a different mindset to others and will only take overt offense if their country is specifically targeted, rather than a mush that makes fun of everybody. Even if the person making fun is from somewhere they have every reason to hate.

I should know, as my country has suffered cultural genocide also. And that is the mindset I tend to follow. (I find I am a lot calmer since taking this route :)

You're right, anon. Very right. Clearly I wasn't thinking, which can't be any excuse. Thank you for pointing this out.

Hetalia isn't anti-Korean (though it could be perceived that way if only the Korean character was talked about) even if they find it offensive. Whether due to historical or present day problems.
How about "a comic with anti-Korean aspect"? Maybe it would help if I elaborated my last sentence in the previous comment. The reason I brought up the colonization and the cultural genocide is twofold.

First, Korean people are extremely cautious of Japanese culture. I don't know if you're informed of this, but it's only recent that Japanese pop culture was allowed in Korean market. They are used to the notion that culture, Japanese culture in particular, is an effective instrument of violence as they experienced it themselves.
Second, many aspects of the Korea character in Hetalia, based on Japan's perception of Korea, meddles with their shared past -- the colonization and the cultural genocide. In Hetalia, Korea is depicted as an individual who is somewhat fixated on Japan. And I have to admit, this is an accurate depiction of the two countries' relationship. But as this quite unrequited rivalry stems from the past of having been ruled over and culturally deprived of, and as younger generation of Japanese people find this an annoying sort of joke, I don't think Koreans are reading too much into this comic a Japanese person created. Not to mention Korea appears holding and wearing Japanese flag. It's a reminder of their past, not a nice one at that, and...well, not something Japanese person can make fun of, without expecting a certain kind of reaction in Korea.

I don't really think Korean people can chillax regarding this matter. As far as I know, Japan never acknowledged what Korea suffered from their colonization.

Same anon here.

As I reread my comment, I realize I was being an ass. Sorry about this, I really shouldn't have.
