Transcript: Recently one of my main fandoms has had an unusual number of "watching the show" style fics pop up.

On one hand, whatever, let people write what they want to write, not everything has to be your cup of tea, etc. On the other hand, I'm kind of baffled that, after having not seen any "watching the show" fics since like 2012 on Fanfiction.net, all of a sudden there are like 5 different frequently updated ones always sitting on the first page of AO3 and pulling in massive numbers of hits and kudos.

Is this a sign that the migration of fandom over to AO3 has finally filtered down to people who are literally Googling "fanfic" for the first time? Have the last couple of seasons, which saw a decrease in fan engagement, finally started to pull in new fans like the network obviously planned? Or is this just an inevitable cycle where every so often fans will go back to old forms that fell to the side for a reason? Idk, but I'm an bitter old fan lol

These, and "gchat"/chatroom style fics, are almost never as funny as the writer thinks they are. Sometimes they're unintelligible.

They should stay on the writer's tumblr and only be shared among their own friends. I had hoped fandom had grown out of those and I hate seeing them popping up on A03.

Ugh, chatfics

I completely agree about chatfics. I did really try once or twice, but I think you’re right that they’re just not as funny as the author thinks

What is a 'watching the show' style fic?

(Anonymous) 2021-02-19 11:15 pm (UTC)(link)
I've seen a couple of these pop up in the MCU lately. I think it's where the characters, through magic whatever, watch their own show/movies?

Is this like that MCU fic recently where some unknown/omniscient third party locks all the Avengers in a room and makes them watch the Iron Man movies?

I couldn't get into it, but I think that was more because of the focus on forcing everyone to feel bad for Tony Stark. It's not a fic type I'd encountered before, but could maybe be interesting if well handled? (I mean, that's basically my attitude on most tropes)

2012 on FFN? OP, I feel like you might be dating yourself. I don't think the trope made it into the 2010s. I associate it mostly with pre-HBP Harry Potter fandom. The book, not the movie, which would be around 2005.

I like "Watching the series" fic... but maybe it's because my fanfic reading started in the 2010s, and I don't remember it being a big thing.

I have never encountered this trope myself, and I am grateful for that. It just feels very twee and forced to me.

I’m not really a fan of the trope, but I can see why it would be amusing for readers, especially people who are newer to fandom (or weren’t in a fandom where it was super popular before).

Things change depending on which fandom you're in. It's probably a series you yourself grew out of considering your reaction here as it is.
