Re: Friendship during chronic illness

Have some experience with this, having grown steadily sicker for ten years, and unfortunately there are some people for whom it just doesn't matter. Some people don't want to hear that you're ill, whether because they get tired of hearing about it or because they hate to see you suffer, and they will just fall away no matter what, even if you really try to stay in contact.

But the folks who stick by you when you're inconsistent or even absent for awhile? They're your real friends. Personally I try to put the most effort into the people who have shown willingness to stick around through the awkwardness, and the people who just don't want to hear it might get the extra spoons if I have them.

Sort of hard to tell who's who for awhile, though.
