For me, it was Cate Blanchett as well as Marian Ravenwood back that I liked about the movie. But the racist concept was awful. Two out of four of the Indy movies having icky racist concepts is not good.

I'm less weirded out by people who up-front ship things as the dynamic they are in canon then people who try to erase that dynamic.

Read an essay once where someone tried to claim Giles didn't see Buffy as a daughter because otherwise he wouldn't send her into battle, so their relationship couldn't possibly be parental. That kind of denial of the parental dynamic I find questionable. But outright shipping it because of the dynamic I get if that's people's thing.

You can believe that people should do whatever they think is fun, and still not read fic you think is poorly written, OOC, etc., because that's not fun for you. It's fun for other people! That's great! But if it's not fun for you to read it, you don't have to.

Surprise! You're still a snob about people who don't have the same reading taste you do. You're just aiming that snobbery in a different direction.

You're not superior because you don't mind OOC fic. You weren't superior before when you only read what you considered IC fic.

I watched the show from the beginning, I don't ship Buffy/Giles *at all*, and I still never saw their dynamic as parent/child. Mentor/mentee, yes.

Forgive me if I'm wrong - I haven't seen the movie in a while - but I think Crystal Skull is one of the more benign and less racist uses of the trope? Because as far as I recall, they don't emphasize the aliens founding civilization so much - it came across to me as more that there's this one weird, fucked-up civilization built around a crashed alien ship off in the jungle somewhere.

The weird indigenous guard tribes aren't great either though. I guess at least it's not the most racist movie in the Indiana Jones series.

Also, from a purely filmic level, it was bad. It's really specifically how bad everything is once they go to the forest. The beginning isn't bad (although it has major problems, like EG the character of Mac) and the end has some fun ideas but everything in the forest... the action scenes are awful and the rest of the scenes are just an interminable runaround.
