It's possible and certainly debatable but I'm not sure we'll ever get a sure-fire answer. In regards to the Doctor, though, I definitely think it was written to be a one-sided romance, but I don't think John Barrowman did his. BEST TO CONVEY THAT. Particularly since they really didn't take it in that direction until Doctor Who S3/end of Torchwood S1, and he and David Tennant just didn't click the way he and Christopher Eccleston did. Quite unfortunate really.

I actually found more of a romantic feel to the Jack/Doctor relationship when it was the Ninth Doctor. Once Ten and Jack met up it hit me as something was lost (which it was, really).

In fact, every character apart from Bella and Edward would appear to have a personal history twenty times more interesting than all four and a half of the books put together.
