Quite so. But wanting to understand Spirited Away or Grave of the Fireflies or Akira in the original language isn't cause for disgust, either. Different genre, that's all. Popular =/= bad. Learning a language because you enjoy something that was originally made in that language and want to understand it better isn't a crime.

Not a crime, no. But it's hard to take people seriously when they crow about self-teaching Japanese and really haven't put any thought into it beyond "I love Gundam Wing! Japan must be AWESOME!"

But then most people like that annoy me for reasons that become far more apparent long before they ever get so far as announcing that while I'm still paying attention to them. :P
