I'm a feminist today because of fandom. Fandom (and meta, specifically), opened my eyes to gender, race, class, sexuality, etc issues. Likewise, a good friend of mine was raised in a fundamentalist, homophobic environment, and she credits slash fanfiction with making her see that hey, gays are people too. Is fandom sufficient? No, but it gets people started, makes them see the world in a different light, shows them how to engage critically with texts and culture - it is a teaching tool.

There's a different between using something to raise awareness and using something to actually teach. I don't doubt a lot of people were made aware of gender/race/class/sexuality issues because of fandom, but that doesn't mean that a comic book, tv show, movie, anime, etc. is a good teaching tool.
