Wow.

Just...no. Having the right to vote and go to school does not equality make.

*cuts-and-pastes from response to other comment*

It's getting a university education. It's having a long life expectancy. It's moving up in the professional world. You'd agree, no?

Women go to college in substantially larger numbers than men do, now. They also live at least seven years longer on average. Now, they're also eroding the long lead that men have had in business, both in terms of equal pay and professional advancement. They're even a majority of the U.S. population.

The right to vote is old news. :-) True, there's still a little ways to go, but ... watch. In less than a generation, women will have, statistically, everything they wanted and more. It's a good thing; it's already happening.

(Response to this specific comment: Women have come a lot farther than the two things you mention. I wonder if they realize just how far?)

No. That's only part of it.

It's not being seen world-wide as the property of men, whether that view is overt or covert. It's not having everything associated with women devalued in relation to things associated with men. It's eliminating homophobia - which is fundamentally misogynistic. It's recognizing that not all women are the same, or have the same concerns; that race and class and various other things separate the experiences of women. It's recognizing that all women DO share being oppressed as women. And many other things I don't have the time, or room, or even awareness of to mention.

There is so much more to equality that being about to vote, work, or go to school. Note that I mentioned those things because you mentioned them first.

And I think you're incredibly condescending for suggesting that the people replying to you don't have a good idea how far we've gotten. Particularly when you don't seem to have ANY idea how far there is left to go.

When - IF - feminism ever achieves its goal of equality for all people regardless of gender, I can promise you that the world will not look ANYTHING like it does right now.

*shrugs*

To be condescending was not my goal.

At least you've got a passion for the cause, no? ;-)
