You know, as much as I love xkcd, I always kind of thought that particular comic missed something blaringly, obviously obvious: If you want a music collection that you can count on, buy the bloody CDs! You can export them into any MP format you want with just the average computer, and then you always have a perfect back-up (as long as you take care of them instead of being an idiot) if something bad happens.

134. Actually, don't a lot of CDs now have copyright protection so that it's just as illegal to export any files or make back-up copies of them? And then, of course, you just have the same problem again with YOU DID AN EVIL ILLEGAL THING BLARGH. I just think it's all sort of ridiculous, though I do agree that definitely, CD quality is best. If I think I want to buy a CD I'm probably going to listen to the songs online or download them to see if the CD itself is actually worth getting, then shell out the money if it is. \O_o/ *weirdo*

Personally I like SNAFU ("Situation Normal: All Fucked Up") better, but I suppose it wouldn't have fit in the context of this secret. ;D

If it was completely illegal to export CDs for your own personal use, why would iTunes - from a company that is one of the 'notorious' ones for locking up files so they can never be played on anything else ever - still come with an 'export CD' feature?

I dunno, but I know I've seen several CDs with the same thing as DVDs on them -- that notice when you try to burn them or w/e that making copies of it is illegal and punishable by federal law, etc. I don't even know though, man, I just try not to keep track of the drama. =_=

I'm the OP of 134, and while I too download first and buy second if I like what I hear, sometimes paying for music (even if I really want to support the band) is not high on my priority list. In those cases, I download FLACs. I do not feel bad about this at all.

As for the CDs, I don't think they use DRM on them anymore, though I'm sure there's still some DRM-protected stock still out on store shelves.

Yeah, especially when you don't have a lot of money and most CDs are like INCREDIBLY EXPENSIVE, it's just... I'll get around to it. No, really, if I like the songs and want to support the band, I might not even end up buy the CD in the end, but a few bits of merch like t-shirts or a hat or something. Same as with anime; the pricing is horrible 99% of the time and it's hell waiting for an entire box set to come out, so I tend to just download/watch online until I actually get the extra money to buy the DVDs. I still intend on buying the box set for R.O.D. the TV and I watched it a few years ago D|

Oh, wow, SHOWS HOW BEHIND I AM. I'm actually a little excited that they got rid of the DRM. Squee. :D

I'm happy they got rid of it, but angry that they are forcing everyone to pay .30 cents more for these files, when they should just all be DRM-free to begin with.

Oink is still the place to go for music downloads (esp. those in FLAC form) but you have to be invited by a member and be able to keep a 1:1 upload ratio or you will be banned. Mininova.org or isohunt.com are good alternatives.
