Transcript: I'm really loving the trend of letting Doctor Who actors basically write fanfic about their own characters. Scratchman and At Childhood's End were both exceptional, and the info on Alex Kingston's River Song novel makes it sound really interesting. It makes me really hope that Star Wars will take note and get Mark Hamill or John Boyega to do their own take on SW. The post-Disney books have been mostly underwhelming, and getting an actor's take on the franchise could breathe new life into certain characters.

I know a few star Trek actors have done this, but I doubt it would work for Star Wars, especially now that Disney has taken over.

Mainly because DW is a lot more casual about canon. an episode can completely contradict something from a previous story, and it's completely likely that it too will be contradicted in the future, and it's mostly cool. Fans complain, but 'timey wimey, wibbly wobbly' and you can fairly easily forget or erase a bad storyline.

Most DW viewers don't read the books, so it would be especially easy to just ignore something ever happened. I've only read Torchwood books, but the show never referenced them, it was only the other way around.

On the other hand, SW fans are still angry about what happened to what's now called Legends. They very much do care about canon and plotholes etc. 'That's not how the Force works', etc.

Add to that the fact that Disney likes its corporate synergy and wants the films, shows, novels, comics, etc all to fit together, and it's unlikely they'll hand over the reins to an actor. Or they might, but it would all have to be checked by the story group first. Meaning, it probably wouldn't be that much better than if it came from a random author.

This isn't a value judgment btw. I feel like both approaches to tie-in novels and/or canon can be fun. But it does make a novel by a SW actor unlikely IMO.

Oh man, I didn't even know this was a thing! I knew about Doctor Who books and have read a few, but I didn't know some of the actors were writing their own takes on the characters they played. I have a burning desire to read Sophie Aldred's book now because Ace is my favorite companion from the Classic era.

The assumption that all actors will be capable of coming up with interesting plots for books, just because they have ideas about their characters, is ...very hopeful, I guess? Even if acctual writing is left to ghost writers, it is not /that/ easy.

I barely edit or even read the TV Tropes site anymore, but I do check on the "Edit banned/Suspended" thread almost daily. (It's the place where suspended users/editors can plead their case to be reinstated.)
I don't necessarily agree with the moderators, but I still like reading as people are suspended for breaking rules, and as they dispute the ruling or apologize. I usually avoid other forms of drama, but this one I find perversely compelling.

Tangentially related to this secret. Back in 09 I made two edits to two different pages. This was when anons could still make edits. The edits are still there and they make me happy. I feel like my 2000s internet presence has pretty much been erased, so it's nice to have something of my self still on the net.

What bugs me is the superiority of its fans who insist that it is inherently, objectively superior to other scifi and refuse to agree to disagree and keep making arguments over it. Not all fans obviously, but there are some very loud fans. And they do it on the communities of other fandoms too.
