Read what you want, OP - life's too short.

Nothing I've read of GtN has made me want to read it. The reviews i've read don't change that.
*sigh*

I wish my library had it, i'm not paying for a book that seems to hit zero buttons for me, but that so many people seem to think is worthwhile and i'd give a chance to if I could.

Can you request it? A lot of libraries are responsive to requests. I know that's true for my library's ebook library.

We have a pretty poor inter-library system, but i'll can try.

I liked GtN (there was more crime story in it than I was lead to expect (of the "x amount of people stuck in one place, deaths start to happen" variety)), but I struggled as hell with the sequel and abandoned it after one third, because the author went really deep into "let's try to show the mental issues of the character by making things as confusing as possible for the reader" stick, and it just lost me.

I wish fantasy (and s-f) would produce more stand alone books.

Aaaah, that just makes me more wary. Argh.

I wish they would, too. Or do something almost like shared worlds, and have a big cast of characters and different stories that interlock. Crossovers. :D

For what it's worth most goodreads reviewers disagree with my opinion on the second book, so...

But honestly, I think it would often benefit new authors to start smaller - it's easier to control, structure-wise, and, as you noted, you can still build it up into a "shared universe" and benefit from having a series.

Exactly. Seems like a lot of writers get ambitious to do a trilogy, but then seem to just...get lost. Or forget the story, or want to suddenly change it up....
