My parents were really, extremely distant and neglectful in most ways. There was a lot of emotional abuse and some physical abuse. There was a lot of gas lighting and mind games, too.

So for parental figures in stories, I gravitate towards parents who respect kids and want to help them. Like they have fair expectations and always try to figure out where the line is between too hands on or not hands on enough. And I LOVE when adults mess up and can own up to the kids they failed. And this may sound stupid but I love seeing hugs and general positive encouragement (please have Johnny Lawrence give out more hugs to his students, Cobra Kai).
