I don't know how many people remember the 70's TV show The Waltons? it was about a very poor rural family with lots of kids during the 30's depression and most of them were a bit too saintly in a way that I found very cloying but there was one thing I liked about the parents. Their oldest son, John Boy (yes, that was the character's name) wanted to be a writer and instead of doing their best to discourage him from doing anything creative for a living, like my parents and a lot of my friends' parents, especially when I was a teenager, his parents actually encouraged him wanting to be a writer and were proud of him for it.
