I mean it's a commentary on how huge a dog you don't really see gets blown up in a kid's head...

And once people grow up they forget that things are just bigger to a kid.

I was scared by my neighbor's Sheltie as a kid because he snapped at me once. In my memory I swear that dog was huge, scary, and as big as me. Adult me sees a Sheltie and knows that I could literally just stomp that little dog if I wanted to. (I mean, I wouldn't but I could.)

My big Shepard mix regularly would walk up to little kids and stare them in the face because he was a tall as them. He was just interested in gently checking them out for any snacks they might have had but still, I'd be freaked out too if a big mouth with sharp teeth walked right up to my face.

Da- I had a huge fear of all dogs from early elementary through middle school because a large... sheepdog? Chased me around a van a few times (out of curiosity/friendliness, etc., I was told). And it might have been the sweetest creature! But I had no experience with large dogs my height back then, and no clue what any of its body language meant, just - it wasn’t stopping, and no one around me was stopping it!

Now I look at how friendly and cute sheepdogs are, and also how tiny I was, and I can see why everyone else there (who was older) thought “fluffy dog chasing little kid, aww!”, but I found it terrifying at the time.
