I've watched the first two episodes, and I don't think they're making Clark a *bad* father. They're trying to make him a more realistic father. All people make mistakes, even the kindest, best, and most well-meaning.

I dig the family drama of it all, but I like that aspect of supporting each other no matter what, even when times are tough.

I've often thought that we as people can do the best we can with each other. We'll try not to hurt each other. Etc. But as much as we guard ourselves against mistakes, including being bad parents, we'll make different ones when it's our turn. I don't mean that pessimistically, but there'll always be something. Like that.

So it works for me. And if you or OP doesn't like it, no harm, no foul.
