As I said to a friend of mine the other day, I think I’m more likely to be judged for liking the sequels than you are for not liking them.

This - I don't talk to people about Star Wars any more because I'm expected to treat the new trilogy as an affront to the entire franchise. Like, I have Problems with it, don't get me wrong, but I'd still watch Rise of Skywalker over Attack of the Clones any day. Apparently that makes me not a real fan?

I guess I should just wait it out. I remember fans acting the exact same way about the prequels back in the day, so I can only assume this trilogy will eventually get the same treatment whenever the next one comes out to receive the fandom's hatred.

Nobody's going to get mad at you for not liking TROS

I haven't, either. And i consider myself a 'real' SW fan.
So, you know - don't sweat it, OP.

There's so much to play with in the Star Wars Universe, and as long as there's something in it that you enjoy you're just as "real" a fan as anyone else.

(Anonymous) 2021-03-10 11:41 pm (UTC)(link)
This. You don't have to see all the movies or watch all the shows, or read all the books and comics to call yourself a fan. Gatekeeping sucks.

If you love Star Wars, you're a fan.

You really didn't miss much. The actors themselves didn't like TROS. IMO, it didn't even feel like a Star Wars film. It felt like JJ Abrams giving Rian Johnson the middle finger, and thus the fans.

So, what IXth Star Wars film?

OT

But...is it pronounced Ryan Johnson? or Ree-Ann (like the "Ree" in Rihanna) Johnson?

Because I've been mentally pronouncing it like Ree-Ann and assuming it was a woman who directed the movie/who everyone is referring to.

I'd wondered too, so to Google I went!

Apparently he pronounces it 'Ryan'.

And now we know.

Me, too, OP.

TBH I don't think you're a real Star Wars fan until there's some parts of canon you just outright ignore.

(Anonymous) 2021-03-11 03:56 am (UTC)(link)
Anyone else mentally swap Finn and Kylo's recovery from last movie's injuries scenes? Or just pretend that awful leaking bubble suit got yeeted out an airlock?

(Anonymous) 2021-03-11 05:16 pm (UTC)(link)
No, but you do you.

(Anonymous) 2021-03-11 11:13 pm (UTC)(link)
I'd say Star Wars has probably blown past the point where assuming a literalist canon is useful.

(Saving popcorn for when MCU reaches the point of blatant retcons and contradictory reboots.)

(Anonymous) 2021-03-11 05:22 pm (UTC)(link)
As someone who wishes with all my heart that I could reverse time or pluck out my memory of seeing TROS in the theater on opening night: you are missing absolutely nothing.

Yikes, did I write this secret in my sleep?

I haven't seen it either, and doubt I ever will. The movie in my head is much better.
