Chinese BL show recs?

(Anonymous) 2021-03-10 11:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Anyone got any recs for Chinese BL tv shows? I've already seen and loved the Untamed.

I really enjoyed Sleuth of the Ming Dynasty . Not nearly as gay as The Untamed, but cute with a strong found family theme.

Thanks! :)

Guardian. Sort of paranormal sleuthing. Really, really good chemistry between the leads. Ending is on the bittersweet side.

Word of Honor. Wuxia/Jianghu story. It's running right now, and I suspect the ending is also going to be bittersweet but man, are they having fun along the way.

Seconding Guardian.

Thirding the Guardian. The plot is pretty good, there's decent (not stellar) special effects but much intense eye contact and a lot of focus on lollipops that I very much enjoyed.

Word of Honor is currently airing (it's officially beeing posted on Youtube with subs) and... Guardia crawled so The Untamed could walk so THIS show could fucking RUN. (Just please don't talk about how you're wondering how they got some stuff past the censors under the official videos, cause fandom is kind of worried that they'll pull it before it finishes airing.)

Horror REC?

[personal profile] comet_scout 2021-03-11 12:21 am (UTC)(link)
I've been in a horror run recently, mostly Slashers. Any recs?

It doesn't need to be slasher or movies, it can be series or books too! (I'm reading Death Head Valley right now)

Most of these are not slashers, just my favs.

Books: NOS4A2. Heart-Shaped Box. Final Girls. A Head Full of Ghosts. The Troop. The Ruins.

Podcasts: Knifepoint Horror. NoSleep Podcast. Wrong Station. Old Gods of Appalachia. Sibling Horror. We're Alive.

Movies: Sweetheart. The Autopsy of Jane Doe. The Endless. Under the Shadow. The Ritual. Pontypool. What We Become. It Follows. The Wailing. The Thing. Train to Busan.

Seconding The Endless, The Ritual, Pontypool, It Follows, and The Thing. I haven't seen the others.

Bear in mind The Endless is almost entirely existential horror. If you're looking for, like, HORROR horror, it won't deliver. But it's really good.

Seconding Old Gods of Appalachia. Wrong station & we're alive sounds interesting.

I'll recommend Tanis.

We're Alive is one of the first horror podcast I listened to. IT MADE ME CRY MULTIPLE TIMES. Also, it is completed which is always a bonus.

Suspiria 1977 (Dario Argento) is one of my favorite horror movies of all time, really great and groundbreaking use of lighting and color.

Cannibal Holocaust (Ruggero Deodato) isn't for everyone, but I always hold it up as a genre-defining masterpiece. It basically created the concept of found footage horror, kick-started the "cannibal horror" subgenre while smashing the entire concept to pieces, and was so realistic for the time that the actors involved had to show up in Italian court to prove that they hadn't been murdered. Warning for onscreen real-life animal death, though, which I know can be a deal-breaker. Some DVD releases have an optional cut with the animal abuse taken out.

The Thing 1982 (John Carpenter) is a masterpiece of tension and has absolutely brutal special effects that pretty much hold up today. One of my all-time favorites, and one you'll see on any "Best Horror" list for good reason.

Night of the Living Dead (George Romero) created the concept of zombies as we know them. If you don't think that a zombie movie can be terrifying and original, watch this. The acting can be a bit cheesy at times (it was incredibly low budget and so most of the actors had never, y'know, acted before), but the plot and tension are just as terrifying as they were in 1968.

As you might be able to tell, I tend towards older horror. Not saying that there isn't newer stuff that's worth watching, but I'm the kind of person to always urge people to check out the classics.

I've got a few.

Movies (slashers):
Halloween (1978) and Halloween II (1981) – I also enjoyed Halloween H20: 20 Years Later, but it’s a much better movie if you disregard the last five minutes or so (the bit with the coroner’s van).
A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984) and A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors
Scream (1996)
Urban Legend
Happy Death Day and Happy Death Day 2U

Movies (general horror, though some have slasher elements):
The Thing from Another World (1951)
The Birds
Jaws and Jaws 2
Carrie (1976)
Alien and Aliens
An American Werewolf in London (1981)
Poltergeist (1982)

Tremors
The Silence of the Lambs and Red Dragon
The Stand (1994)
The Craft
From Dusk till Dawn
Cube
The Relic
The Faculty
The Sixth Sense
Resident Evil
Final Destination 2 and Final Destination 3
Shaun of the Dead
Zombieland
Tucker & Dale vs. Evil
The Cabin in the Woods

Movies (not necessarily good, but fun to watch)

Hush. A deaf writer who retreated into the woods to live a solitary life must fight for her life in silence when a masked killer appears in her window.

The Invitation. While attending a dinner party at his former house, a man starts to believe that his ex-wife and her new husband have sinister plans for the guests.

This two are always on my rec list.
